Since she was a little girl, Katie struggled with her weight. At age 9, her mother had taken her to the family doctor, concerned with the “plumpness” she began to show. From that visit, Katie was prescribed numerous diet pills. “I would take them and feel so sick and nauseated that I would throw them in the trash can at school and then go buy a 10 cent ice cream sandwich!” This marked the beginning of her dieting cycle of losing and gaining back weight throughout her life. Enter adulthood. At 225 lbs, Katie lost all her confidence in herself and felt embarrassment. “Being a pastor’s wife did not make it possible for me to live a life as a recluse, although I just wanted to crawl in a hole and never come out.” Katie knew she had to do something. The real her was hidden under her “layers of excess weight.”
